Bellamy Mansion Museum

The Bellamy Mansion is one of North Carolina's most spectacular examples of antebellum architecture built on the eve of the Civil War by free and enslaved black artisans, for John Dillard Bellamy (1817-1896) physician, planter and business leader; and his wife, Eliza McIlhenny Harriss (1821-1907) and their nine children. After the fall of Fort Fisher in 1865, Federal troops commandeered the house as their headquarters during the occupation of Wilmington. Now the house is a museum that focuses on history and the design arts and offers tours, changing exhibitions and an informative look at historic preservation in action. Please visit our Calendar of Events! Dr. Bellamy built a grand house; Mrs. Bellamy inspired a beautiful garden. Mature towering Magnolia Grandifloras, one of which is taller than the house itself, anchor today?s garden. The formal garden has been recreated to suggest the original one of the mid-nineteenth century complete with curving pathways paved with loose crushed oyster shells and elliptical flowerbeds. Plant materials are chosen from antique varieties that would have been available during the garden?s early years. The lavish attention Mrs. Bellamy gave her garden is now carried on by our FloraBelles volunteers. The garden is open every day for an enjoyable stroll.
